I just got Pioneer 109 burner. In 8X mode, it took me about 8-9 minutes to burn a full DVD when the drive is connected to IDE. But when I connected it to USB2 external enclosure, the same disk took me about 20 minutes to burn. Is it normal due to USB2 speed restriction? Or am I overlooking something here? I know when DMA is disabled, it takes longer to burn. Is it possible that the external enclosre has some restriction such as DMA that I can change? Thanks.
Well, USB 2.0 is supposed to have a 155 meg thruput i believe. So, i seriously doubt that is the problem, it sounds like its either a driver problem (like your DMA suggestion) or something along those lines. So it will only burn at 4x in your USB enclosure? Maybe it was just a faulty disk or did you try more then one disc?
Well, i do know for a fact that USB is alot more CPU intensive on any operation then your internal ribbon cables are. What kind of processor do you have? I dont have much experience with these things, i was just trying to get more information out so someone with experience might be able to help. If you cant find any help here, you might want to try this dedicated forum, .
I sure do have USB2 connections to the computer. If the enclosure is 1.1, Windows usually reports that the 1.1 device is connected to USB2, doesn't it? The enclosure that I got is this; StorTecc PM-525U2-ACB Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure for HDD or CD/DVD-ROM/RW w/ Fan - RETAIL I got it from dealsonic.com and it claims to support upto 400GB of HD and 16X Pioneer Also for the question right above, I tested it with two computers; one desktop with 2.4Ghz with 750MB ram and a notebook with 1.6 Pentium M with 512MB ram. In both cases, the speed is limited to about a half of what it should be. I am not sure whether I mentioned this but when I connected my 3 year-old DVR-105 to the enclosure, the transfer rate (reading rate) is also limited to about 7,000KB/s.

Some external enclosures are limited a little bit. I bought a Belkin USB 2.0 one when they first came out and I can only get about 7.0x / 8.0x out of that one. Then I got another one (not belkin this time - about half the price and does USB 2.0 & Firewire!) from and it works fine at all speeds.
