Unexpected re-boots when at Idle

Advertising

MessageAuthor

My computer reboots only when not doing a task. I ran all of the checks recommended in the sticky's. If I run the cpu torture test the computer will run forever and I can do other task. Anything that is constantly working such as encoding a video is no problem; but once it finishes, so does the computer. I do not have a virus. Does anyone have any ideas.

Maybe your machine tries to go in "sleep mode" or so... Check the "energy options" to disable thus kind of stuff !!! Bye

Check your ram. Some times that causes un-expected reboots...

Thanx to both for your responses. The first thing I do with a computer is to turn off those energy options. It doesn't go to sleep, it does a complete reboot. I suspected my ram, but I tested it with the software from the sticky. Do you think It missed the problem? I would hate to spend money for new ram, since I have to replace both chips in my duel ram config, and have it not be the problem.

it could be your power supply is sh*t or it dosn't produce enough current to power all you drives and so forth. how many watt is it? what brand is it? have you added any new hardware recently? if there are too many power flucuations to your motherboard, your motherboard will reset itself.

RE: Unexpected re-boots when at Idle

I saw several threads discussing this so I decided to replace the power supply. the old one was 250 watts but the new one is 500. Real nice dual cooling fan job. forget the brand name and am at work and can't look it up. No new hardware. Since this problem cropped up I have re-formated my HD for a fresh start. The re-starts caused my system to become unstable. Unstable not really the right descripter but close enough. BTW my Os is XP pro sp1 with all updates. I read several threads discussin bios curruption. I have thought about flashing them, but haven't as of this time. I guess thats my next step followed by replacing the memory. If that doesn't work, it may be my mb. I have run several diagnostic programs and came up empty.

it's a half-joke, but if your comp doesn't reboot when tasks are running, then how about running a small taks that takes, say, 1% cpu (i can think of some, if you're interested). minimize it to the tray or something, and this way there's always something running in the BG. might work. i know it's one of the ugliest hacks i ever devised, but hey, it might work ;)

Virus? be sure you run everything possible to check there is not something rooted in your registry.

Yes I did that. I have discovered what it is. Two software programs caused a conflict. I downloaded a patch and everything is fine. It's kinda funny because I've been useing both programs for months. Thanks to all who responded. I appreciate your assistance.
