Capturing DV with panasonic codec

MessageAuthor

Hi, I currently capture from my DV Camcorder through premier using the panasonic codec (I think although it says Microsoft DV (PAL) in the video compressor in Premier. Is this the best codec to use or should I be looking to use something else. My end result is encode through CCE then put on DVD. //Bodman

I've tried a couple of DV codecs and they all seem pretty much the same to my. IMHO don't wast too much energy on it. cheers

RE: Capturing DV with panasonic codec

I read that the Canopus codec was the fastest for DV encoding, but I never encode to DV - all I do is cutting DV video and adding some few blends and titles. The rendering/encoding time is minimal compared to the time needed for direct stream copy, and that depends on the HD speed only. So, I never really cared about getting another codec than the MS (except the Panasonic, which is only a VFW-modification of the MS-DS codec).

AFAIK the various DV codecs deliver slightly different results, i.e. if you encode the same video with different DV codecs and visualize the differences, then it will become obvious (although I don't think you will realize the difference by just viewing). I read somewhere that the M$ codec and the Panasonic codec produce exactly the same result (bitwise). That might be the reason why some people prefer this codec. bb
