Mic recommendations for sibilant singer/rapper

MessageAuthor

Hi all, I have been recording a friend of mine who is a real talentedd rapper/singer and he has a very sibilant voice. i.e. a lot of de-essing is done. Any how I have been using a rode NT1 ->Penta-> rosetta-> 001 and have noticed that the sound is a lot thinner than when I used an sm57->penta->001 combination. I am having to basically double the vocals to make them sound thick enough to sit well in the mix. Do you guys have any recommendations for a good mic for this kind of singer. I am looking to spend around 500 and have head the baby bottle is good with these types, can anyone confirm or deny? Thanks, daryl

yes get that. TheNT1 is great.I use McDSP and DaD Valve to make my tracks warm. Make sure you use a popper stopper and alot of de-essing. Its common with rappers. Wiz

Try setting the capsule somewhat off-axis from his voice. Move it around in there until you find the right spot. There is a spot on my 4050 where if the vocalist is angled with respect to the plane of the capsule just right, even the most sibilant singers will need minimal de-essing, but low-end and proximity are preserved. The polar pattern print-out that came with your mic (or you can get on line) should be able to help you find that spot for your mics. I HATE de-essing!

Oh yeah - get a 4050. One of the best bargains out there IMHO. Should be able to get one for around $400.

A 4050 is audio technica right? Alright I'll check that out, is there anything else that you would recommend in my price range?

try a dynamic mic. The EV RE20 is often used on siblent vocals, (stevie wonder is the best example that comes to mind) the other dynamic that gets a lot of play on vocals is the shure sm7 . If it is too dead on top many people get rid of the foam windscreen. rick ruben used a senn 421 for a lot of the original run dmc stuff and beastie stuff. hope it helps,
