Echo on demo

Hi, I'm asking this on behalf of my brother who doesn't have web access. I installed PTF on a Win98SE partition on his main drive. He's got the ADI SoundMax onboard sound and it starts up just fine but apparently there's some annoying echo. Can someone let me know what to tell him to do? I really don't want to have to take it back and tweak the hell out of it for a few more hours just so it functions. Thanks. Some more data - Win98SE, unofficial service packs 1.6x and 2. 256MB RAM. 800mhz Duron. Funky motherboard designed for Compaq (FZ11?).Most up to date drivers on everything.

Check to make sure the sound card doesn't have any 'built-in' effects turned on. Open the sound card's control panel and look for 'effects' or 'FX'. Done this once or twice on my soundblaster live myself. When recording, does this echo still exist on playback? If so, then you are hearing both 'input' and 'processed' signal.

It is probably the latency from protools and the card togteher with the direct sound through the soundcard's little mixer. Muet the audiochannel he's recording, and the echo should be gone. You can verify wether this is causing the echo by playing with the buffersizes. Then you should get a different timing on the echo.
