Saving directly back to Reaper with external sound editor

MessageAuthor

I tried Reaper for about a week now. I am using it together with Audacity as an external editor. I already found some posts about using external editors, mainly Soundforge, In one post sb said that it is possible to double click on a part to open it in an external editor..... then when you made changes, click on save and it will save the changed file back to the Reaper project. This is exactly what I want to do but it seems with Audacity this is not possible because of a difference to other programs. In Audacity, there is no "save" command as far as I know. You only have "export" and "save project". Thats it. Save project of course is the wrong optin for this case. But also when I click export it will just export a file but it ill not change the file already loaded into Reaper.... So I have to export the file, then reimport it into Reaper. Now I am wondering, am I making anything wrong? Or did I overee something? In Soundforge it works so it should work also in Audacity somehow? Thanks for any help.

if you got the time for that..... would be great of course. i couldnt really find any free alternative to audacity otherwise i would try another software.... i only know of nanosaur as an option but it doesnt support flac files, which is a no no for me. having audacity work this way would be the perfect setup for me.

im at a different pc now so cant say which version of audacity i have but i downloaded a new one just 1 week ago so should be new. It supports flac out of the box. im also a bit confused with audacity's "export" function. why not just have a "save" and "save as" command like everybody else?

i guess im a bit slow but I couldnt quite follow your steps. what exactly do i have to click. Lets say i have an audio file on a track in reaper. I double click it to open it in audacity to make an edit. From that point, what exactly do i have to click in orde to save the file back to reaper?

Sorry for being a bit unclear, I've been doing major rewiring here. :D In case this helps, here's a little utility that copies the selected takes filename to the clipboard: The shortcut is Win-Ctrl-Alt-S, Select the take, hit the shortcut to copy the take filename to the clipboard (Win_Ctrl-Alt-S), then open the take in the editor, edit, and hit export...once you have navigated to the required folder, just hit ctrl-v to paste in the filename, then enter. Hope it helps some! :)

It seems I was wrong about the newer Audacity too...It won't necessarily export automatically to the original folder of the opened sound, which is a pain... :( But anyway, that is the pre-requisite of making Reaper automatically use the file that is exported by the editor. (You can in Reaper select a new file to be used by the media item, though, but that also requires a "safari" around the computer's hard disk folders from the file open dialog...)
