imic to import sound

MessageAuthor

A friend of mine is using PT Free on her laptop (Mac--don't know which model) but she doesn't have an analogue import jack to import sounds from a minidisc. Can she use Griffin's IMIC to do this? I think there is some control panel thing that needs to be downloaded that allows the user to treat the USB slot as a line in, but I'm not certain. Anyway, I'm interested in feedback about this device and/or other ways to import sound from a portable minidisc to the Mac laptop. Thanks.

Any USB device that shows up in the sound control panel without an extension should work. Don't know about Firewire. Most of that stuff is newer, and made for X. Can't hurt to try though.

Thanks for the reply. I've posted this just in case folks come up with the same question down the road. The device will show up as external device and USB will appear to the left. It works with PT Free but you do need the proper Apple Audio Extension. Here's the link and the quote: "A few programs that do not currently work with USB audio such as Soundedit II, Pro Tools free, Deck II, or Mic Note Pad do not support ASIO. For these programs the solution is to have the Apple Audio Extension, v 1.3.3 or later installed on your computer. The extension ships with current Macs (Mac OS 9.1 CD, v 1.2). There is currently no way to upgrade this component so you must have the CD from a recent machine in order to obtain it. Logic Audio is also directly compatible without using the ASIO driver with the newer Apple Audio Extension."

RE: imic to import sound

Thanks for the tip. When I posted in bold "without an extension" that was referring to third-party extensions. I didn't realize that the Apple Audio Extension was required for USB since I didn't try USB until after I had updated to 9.1. I don't use USB though because it doesn't play nice on my 8600 w/USB PCI card. Random bursts of 0dbfs white noise are not cool with 900 watts driving your 90db efficient monitors.

You can't use ASIO with PTF. You have to use SoundManager, and Apple Audio Extension like was described above.
