a/d converters on alesis A1-3, any thoughts?

Just about to buy this unit for some additional I/O for digi 001. Wanted to know if anyone has it or knows if the converters are a step up from digi. I had the digimax LT for awhile and didnt notice much of a difference, and I was rather dissapointed in the pres honestly. Very thin sounding. Anyway, any feedback would be great, thanks! check out sound samples of my work at

I'm surprised you didnt like your Digimax LT ?? I love mine and thought it was a big step up from the 001 stock converters. The pres certaily arent Neve quality but they were very clean and quiet. And have compared favorably to any pre under $200/channel I've tryed. Sorry to say ... but if you had popped the lid on your Digimax LT you'd find that the converters are in fact Alesis converters of the same type used in the AI-3. If you didnt like the Digimax LT you probably wouldnt like the AI-3. I am a bit curious ... were you using the Digimax LT as your clock source? I know that I was, and it seemed to help. best of luck - the 'slide

Presonus has a new one as well as Mackie...might want to wait if you can. If you already have a DigiMAX, you may be able to for a while...

I was in optical sync mode when I had the digimax LT hooked up if thats what you mean. I have a soundcraft spirit M 12 also, and when I switched to recording through the pres on that..it was a huge improvement over the digimax LT preamps. If the A1-3 uses the same converters than thats perfect. I'll just run the 9-12 channels on the soundcraft through the first 4 channels on the alesis. I don't want to buy any multi channel digital pre, rather spend the 1000 bucks on a good analog dual or mono mic pre (i.e. avalon, vintech, trident) and slowly build off of that. Thanks for the info!
