RE: Metronome and pervious tracks bleed over to newest track ?

hi we are having trouble recording with reaper, First - when we use metronome it gets recorded right onto the track along with the music which we dont want to happen, we want to hear the metronome but we dont want it permanently recorded over top our music track. Second - when we try to record a second track the previously recorded track gets recorded onto the newest recorded too. SO the old track material ends up mixed in with the new material on the newest track ... In fact if you try to record more tracks say 3 or 4 more then all the previous tracks get recorded as well onto the newest track ???? we are recording guitar through a stereo effects pedal into a cheap mixer which goes out into the computer through the "Stereo" Audio Input Jack on the back of the PC, we use Mother Boards built in Sound Card - ASUS P4P 800 ....(I think its was 800, i dont have it here with me) I think the mother board has a built in thing that controls the audio called REALTEK AC97 audio driver or something like that ...(sorry if im vague on specifics here). I think (just guessing) that it may be the set up, im not sure which input we are supposed to use for recording through the PC's Audio input jack, so maybe I am using the wrong input thing " WDM Kernel Streaming, Direct Sound, wave out, ASIO, Dummy ,,, and or maybe we had the right one picked at one point but maybe we had the settings messed up ? BTW I know that asio is not the one, that one i know is for USB hook ups.,,, Again the metronome is getting recorded when it on, and the previous tracks get bounced or recorded onto the newest tracks being recorded which is not what we want. anyone have an idea what settings or what we have to do to fix this so we can record into the audio input jack of his PC ? thank you . EDIT NOTE - sorry the REALTEK driver thing was actually called REALTEK AC97 and not what every i previously incorrectly called it.. .

RE: Metronome and pervious tracks bleed over to newest track ?

hi again , was doing some looking up on the net and found out that that SPDIF on the back of his pc is a SPDIF OUT , so i dont think we can use it to record into the pc, think it was made for hooking up surround speaker systems etc.. darn i had hoped that spdif jack would have maybe been a easy remedy for the issues we are having right now when trying to record.

It sounds like you have your soundcard set to record the 'stereo mix' or 'What You Hear' options instead of Line In. Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control Mute all except Wave and Master volume. Next go to options>Properties Select the Recording button and push OK [this is where you tell the computer which source to record] Select Line In This volume control sets your recording level. This should get you going until you get a proper audio interface.

thank you EpicSounds, I think you may have figured it out, I can recall seeing in the volume control panel that the stereo mix was checked to be on, I just thought that it was supposed to be that way, looks like i thought wrong lol.. gonna try what you said when i get to that PC later tonight and i will post back here and let you know how it worked out. we had tried for about 3 hours or more to get it to work, think we hit every button/setting in reapers preferences, I just hope we didnt screw up some other settings while trying to figure this thing out...well fingers crossed anyway. again thanks EpicSounds for your assistance ... much appreciate it :) :) .
