Computer Switch, Transfer Info Help

Advertising

MessageAuthor

Hi, Just switching from a G4 867Mhz to a Dual 2.5 G5. I was wondering the best or suggested way to move my plug in's, plug in settings, and IO Setups over without reinstalling everything. I'm going to stick with PT 6.9.3 for now. Any advice would help. Thanks!!

Careful for your disk authorized plugins. If you swap hard drives, you might loose some of the "freebee's" like sample tank, amplitube, tracks, Uno Essentials, etc...

RE: Computer Switch, Transfer Info Help

I migrated the brute force way -- re-installed everything, and would you believe my rig never crashes, and is unbelieveably solid? You get back what you put into it. Try to cheat it, and you may get burned. With that said, use Apple's migration assistant (or setup assisten, or whatever they're calling it this month) to move your data. Backup your plugins folder just in case. Don't worry about disk auths, you're going to have to get new ones for everything. So just accept that once every 2 years or so, you have to dance the dance. Move as many plugs to iLok as you can, so this is no longer an issue. Apple's tool will definitely move your user directory, applications, and lots of your prefs... BUT -- don't even bother with protools... do a clean uninstall, then a complete re-install. This is the only way to be certain you have what you need. This is one place where you do not want to skimp... take your time, start fresh, and take advantage of the new car smell.

Deauthorize plugins that are not on the iLok. Create a disk image from your original drive, I would do this by starting the G4 up in target mode, connect it through FireWire to your brandnew G5 and run disk utility on the G5. There you can create a disk image of your original startup disk that contains all the Digi stuff. Repair permissions first on the G4. Reinstall the G5 with a fresh copy of PT, install the plugins. Then you can copy the rest of the data (settings, I/O settings etc) from the disk image. Keep the image until the new system runs smoothly, you can always go back to the original image when necessary.
